  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Headed to Cincinnati

Candelario signed a contract with the Reds on Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Adding Candelario is an interesting move for the Reds, who already have a plethora of young infield talent at the major-league level. Candelario slashed .251/.336/.471 with 22 homers and 70 RBI between the Nationals and Cubs last season. He's capable of playing either corner infield position -- though he has far more experience at third -- and his arrival could signal a potential plan for the Reds to move on from Christian Encarnacion-Strand or Noelvi Marte (hamstring).

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Goes deep Friday

Candelario went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Brewers. Candelario was reinstated from the injured list Wednesday after missing a few weeks with a back strain, and Friday's home run was his first hit since returning. He's been solid this year with an .807 OPS, 22 home runs and 38 doubles, and the Cubs will need the infielder to produce over their final two games if they want to sneak into the playoff field.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Back from injured list

Candelario (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will be in the lineup Wednesday against Atlanta, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The 29-year-old has been sidelined since Sept. 11 with a back strain but is ready to rejoin the Cubs for the final five games of the regular season. Candelario was mired in a 3-for-36 slump prior to landing on the injured list and will attempt to get back on track as Chicago competes for a wild-card spot.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Continuing baseball activities

Candelario (back) is continuing his progression through baseball activities Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Out since Sept. 12 due to a lower-back strain, Candelario was cleared to begin working out Friday and should be able to return to the Cubs' active roster at some point before the regular season comes to an end this Sunday. He could even be activated as early as Wednesday, per Montemurro. Miles Mastrobuoni has been receiving the majority of the playing time at third base in Candelario's absence, with Cody Bellinger largely playing first base.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Resumes baseball activity

Candelario (back) resumed baseball activities Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Candelario is already eligible to return from the injured list after suffering a lower-back strain in mid-September. He had slumped to a .083/.227/.278 line in the 13 games prior to hitting the injured list, however, so the Cubs will want to make sure he's right before activating him.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Could return next week

Manager David Ross expressed optimism Tuesday that Candelario (back) could return next week, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. Candelario has been sidelined for over a week now due to a lower-back strain, but it sounds like he is making some semblance of progress with his side work. The 29-year-old corner infielder had registered a .773 OPS with five homers and two steals through 36 games for Chicago prior to landing on the injured list.

The Cubs placed Candelario on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Candelario suffered the injury in Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks and will be sidelined until at least a week from Thursday. Nick Madrigal is playing third base Tuesday at Colorado, with Cody Bellinger covering first base and Christopher Morel filling the DH role. Alexander Canario has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa as a depth option off the bench.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Held out Monday

Candelario (back) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies. Candelario left Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks with tightness in his back, and he will not play a full nine innings one day later. It's unclear both if he will be available off the bench and if he will miss any further action.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Nursing tight back

Candelario left Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks due to back tightness, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Candelario went 0-for-2 with a strikeout prior to being pulled with the injury in the bottom of the fifth inning. The 29-year-old is still being evaluated by the training staff, and he should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.

Candelario is not in the Cubs' lineup Wednesday against the Giants. Candelario is receiving a rare day off. His last game on the bench was Sept. 1, but that was part of a doubleheader. Prior to that, he had appeared in every game since Aug. 13.

Candelario went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's victory over the Pirates. Candelario put the Cubs ahead 3-1 with a two-run homer off Bailey Falter in the fourth inning, which was his 19th long ball of the year (matching a career high) and third since joining Chicago. The 29-year-old Candelario has two homers and eight RBI over his last six games, though he's gone just 5-for-23 (.217) in that span. Overall, he's slashing .267/.347/.489 with 71 runs scored, 65 RBI and eight steals across 510 plate appearances between the Cubs and Nationals this season.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Slugs two-run blast Monday

Candelario went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in Monday's 8-6 loss to the Tigers. Candelario continued his excellent play for the Cubs since coming over at the trade deadline, as he's now batting .349 with two home runs and 12 runs scored across 18 games. The infielder also has 36 doubles this season, which is good for second in the majors behind Freddie Freeman.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Not starting Sunday

Candelario is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays. Since being traded to the Cubs on July 31, Candelario has started in every game. With the Cubs in August, the infielder is slashing .425/.489/.625 in 45 plate appearances. Sunday will just be a rest day for the 29-year-old with Nick Madrigal getting the start at third.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Goes deep Saturday

Candelario went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and two runs scored in Saturday's win over Atlanta. Candelario has hit the ground running since joining the Cubs at the trade deadline, as he's now gone 11-for-19 with five extra-base hits and eight runs scored in five games. The infielder has been a great addition, and he should remain locked into the lineup with a regular spot at first base, giving him a chance to build on his strong numbers at the plate.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Possible waiver wire pickups

Candelario has played two games for his new team. He has eight hits, raising his batting average from .258 to .273. Three of those hits were doubles, and his 33 trail only Freddie Freeman. That's a big reason why he's a top-10 third baseman in points leagues, the format that actually rewards doubles, but you may be just as surprised to learn he's top-12 in Rotisserie, the format that requires every team to start an extra corner infielder. My hunch is that he's been playing over his head, which is supported by his .242 xBA and .414 xSLG. But I'll note that this is his first year outside of Comerica Park, which is the most stifling of venues for a hitter who lives in the gaps. We saw the effect on Nick Castellanos once he escaped (coincidentally, to the Cubs), so maybe it's not a stretch to think Candelario is really this good.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Four more hits Wednesday

Candelario went 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and four runs scored in Wednesday's 16-6 win over the Reds. Candelario has now played in two games with the Cubs since getting traded over from the Nationals, and he's proceeded to go 8-for-9 with three doubles and six runs scored. He won't be able to stay this hot, but he's been solid all season with an .854 OPS and has fit in very nicely so far with his new team.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: To play first base regularly

Cubs manager David Ross said Tuesday that Candelario will get regular starts at first base, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. Acquired from the Nationals on Monday in exchange for a pair of minor-leaguers, Candelario is making his Cubs debut at first base Tuesday night against the Reds. Nick Madrigal is starting at third base and Christopher Morel is serving as the designated hitter. This new defensive formation will allow Cody Bellinger to see more action in center field as Chicago looks to make a late run at the NL Central title.

  • Cubs' Jeimer Candelario: Traded to Cubs

Candelario was traded from the Nationals to the Cubs on Monday in exchange for DJ Herz and Kevin Made, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Candelario has deep ties with the Cubs organization, as he first signed with them as a 16-year-old in 2010 and made his big-league debut with Chicago in 2016 before getting traded to the Tigers and then the Nationals. The switch-hitting third baseman has been very productive this season, slashing .258/.342/.481 with 16 home runs, 57 runs, 53 RBI and six steals in 99 games while playing every day and hitting in the middle of the lineup. He should be able to play almost every day with the Cubs, but he could get more rest days now that he is a part of a deeper active roster.
