  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Playing time opening up

Hanley has played in seven of the Stars' last 15 games. Hanley sat out the first 10 contests of the season, but he's since found a more regular path to playing time. He filled in when Thomas Harley was hurt, and Hanley has now started to push the struggling Nils Lundkvist for the last spot in the lineup with the Stars at virtually full health. Hanley has no points with seven hits, six blocked shots, two shots on goal and a minus-1 rating over seven appearances, so he's still not likely to be much of an asset for fantasy managers.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Waiting for opportunity

Hanley has been a healthy scratch in seven straight games to begin the season. Hanley has to bide his time as the Stars' seventh defenseman. The 32-year-old collected two helpers, a plus-5 rating, 24 hits and 28 blocked shots over 26 contests in a similar role last season. Nils Lundkvist has been given a longer runway to establish himself this season, but Hanley could step in if he struggles or if the Stars lose a blueliner to injury.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Re-signing with Dallas

Hanley inked a two-year, $1.58 million deal with the Stars on Saturday. Hanley re-upped with the Stars after logging two assists and a plus-5 rating in the 26 games last season. The 32-year-old defenseman will likely serve as blue line depth again in 2023.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Earns assist in return to lineup

Hanley logged an assist and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Kraken in Game 4. Hanley filled in with Jani Hakanpaa (lower body) unavailable for this contest. This was Hanley's fourth appearance of the playoff, and the assist was his first point to go with one shot on goal, two hits, three blocked shots and a plus-4 rating. As long as Hakanpaa is out, Hanley should have a chance to stick in the lineup.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Gathers assist in win

Hanley logged an assist in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Blackhawks. Hanley returned from a two-game stint as a healthy scratch. He rewarded head coach Pete DeBoer's decision by setting up Joe Pavelski's tip-in tally in the second period. Hanley has two helpers through nine games in March, which is all of his offense through 24 appearances this season. The 31-year-old has added 27 blocked shots, 23 hits, 15 PIM, 13 shots on net and a plus-6 rating. His veteran presence has kept him in the lineup over Nils Lundkvist as the Stars contend with the Wild and the Avalanche for positioning in the Central Division.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Snags helper

Hanley logged an assist and went plus-2 in Thursday's 10-4 win over the Sabres. Hanley has gotten the short end of the playing time in a battle with Nils Lundkvist this season. The 31-year-old Hanley has played in four of the last eight contests, but his assist Thursday was his first point in 17 outings this season. He's added 21 blocked shots, 15 hits, 15 PIM, nine shots on goal and a plus-6 rating, so fantasy managers don't need to track his production closely.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Makes rare appearance

Hanley was included in the Stars' seven-defensemen lineup Wednesday versus the Blackhawks. Hanley saw just 5:48 of ice time and failed to record a fantasy-relevant stat in his first game since Jan. 25. Injuries to Luke Glendening (lower body) and Joel Kiviranta (lower body), coupled with the Stars' recent struggles, prompted head coach Pete DeBoer to try something different Wednesday. Hanley has no points, 17 blocked shots, 15 PIM, 13 hits, nine shots on goal and a plus-5 rating through 14 appearances this season, so he shouldn't be on fantasy managers' radar.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Gaining playing time

Hanley has suited up in the Stars' last two games. Hanley has occasionally filled in for Nils Lundkvist or Colin Miller this season, but it's clear Hanley is the Stars' No. 7 defenseman. The 31-year-old has yet to record a point in 11 appearances, adding 15 PIM, 13 hits, 13 blocked shots, nine shots on net and a plus-4 rating while averaging 11:39 of ice time per game.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Back in press box

Hanley has sat out the last five games. Hanley was in the lineup three times between Nov. 28 and Dec. 4, but Nils Lundkvist bounced back after his stint as a healthy scratch. Barring an injury, Hanley is likely to remain as a seventh defensemen. He has no points, nine blocked shots, 13 PIM, eight hits and a plus-4 rating through eight appearances this season.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Sitting as extra defenseman

Hanley has played in just three of the Stars' 13 games this season. Hanley drew into three games when Miro Heiskanen was unavailable in late October. When Heiskanen returned, Hanley resumed his role as the seventh defenseman, which has seen the 31-year-old often sit in the press box. He logged six PIM, four shots on goal, four blocked shots, two hits and a plus-1 rating in his three appearances. When the Stars' defense corps is healthy, it's unlikely Hanley will get into many games.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Registers assist in loss

Hanley collected an assist and four hits in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Kraken. Hanley rejoined the lineup Sunday after sitting out Saturday's 5-4 win over the Sharks. The 30-year-old snapped an eight-game point drought with his helper. Given his limited third-pairing role, Hanley is not an option for most fantasy formats. He's up to four points, 12 shots on net, 46 hits, 31 blocked shots and a minus-6 rating through 35 contests.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Posts assist Saturday

Hanley logged an assist and two hits in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Rangers. Hanley was paired with Esa Lindell on defense, and the former set up the latter's goal in the opening minute of the game. With Andrej Sekera (illness) and Miro Heiskanen (illness) both missing from the Stars' defense corps, Hanley is set to play a regular role in the near term. The 30-year-old is up to three points, 32 hits, 26 blocked shots and a minus-4 rating through 26 contests this season. Fantasy managers won't need to track his production, as he'll be limited to third-pairing usage.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Out of lineup again

Hanley sat as a healthy scratch for a second straight game Friday versus the Blackhawks. The Stars are still without Andrej Sekera (upper body), but prospect Thomas Harley has played the last two games instead of the veteran Hanley. The 30-year-old Hanley has just two points with 26 hits, 25 blocked shots and a minus-4 rating in 22 contests this season. When he plays, it's rarely in more than a bottom-pairing role.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Finally nets first NHL goal

Hanley scored a goal in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Flames. Hanley's story is one of perseverance, as he's often had to settle for two-way contracts and part-time roles to stick in the NHL. Now in his seventh season, he hadn't scored in the big leagues. He changed that at 4:26 of the first period Tuesday, with a shot that deflected off a Flame and through Jacob Markstrom's pads. To make it an even sweeter moment, this was Hanley's 100th NHL contest. The 30-year-old won't add much on offense -- he's at two points, six shots on net and a minus-3 rating in 19 appearances this season. He'll stick around as a veteran option to give Andrej Sekera rest on the third pairing from time to time.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Provides assist in loss

Hanley registered an assist and two PIM in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Canadiens. Hanley had a shot attempt redirected in by Tyler Seguin at 3:03 of the third period. The 30-year-old Hanley had been held off the scoresheet in his previous 12 games this season. The defenseman has added 18 hits, nine blocked shots, four shots on net and a minus-4 rating while filling a part-time role. He'll likely be back in the press box as a healthy scratch once Andrej Sekera (COVID-19 protocols) returns.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Quiet in return

Hanley had two hits and one shot in a 7-1 loss to the Panthers on Friday. Hanley logged 14:17 of ice time after missing six games (personal). The defenseman is without a point in 11 contests this season.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Suiting up Friday

Hanley (personal) will play Friday against the Panthers, Matthew DeFranks of The Dallas Morning News reports. Hanley will dress for the first time since Dec. 17. The 30-year-old blueliner has a minus-3 rating while averaging 11:04 of ice time through 10 games this season.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Unavailable Wednesday

Hanley is on paternity leave and won't be with the team Wednesday versus Seattle, Bruce LeVine of Dallas Stars Radio reports. Hanley has been a healthy scratch for much of the season and in five consecutive games.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Not often in lineup

Hanley has played in just one of the Stars' nine games in November. Hanley has been a frequent healthy scratch, and he's done little to earn more playing time when he's in the lineup. The 30-year-old defenseman has no points, six hits, six blocked shots and a minus-3 rating in six games this year. He'll occasionally enter the lineup to give Andrej Sekera rest, but Hanley is likely just a placeholder for top prospect Thomas Harley.

  • Stars' Joel Hanley: Back to press box

Hanley was a healthy scratch Monday versus the Blue Jackets. Hanley played in the last four games with John Klingberg sidelined by a lower-body injury. With the Stars' defense corps now full healthy, Hanley is set to serve as a spare blueliner until another injury arises. He could also occasionally enter the lineup to give Andrej Sekera a night off. The 30-year-old Hanley has logged two shots on net, four hits, five blocked shots and a minus-1 rating in his four appearances so far.
