Player Outlook
The Steelers kept Trubisky as a quality backup behind second-year starter Kenny Pickett. As reviled as Trubisky is among some fans, he still was better in every metric than Pickett except expected points added per dropback and interception rate, neither of which are strong indicators of Pickett being better. If this trend continues through the first chunk of the season, maybe even the first five weeks, the Steelers could say "How we doin'?" to Trubisky after their Week 6 bye. It really doesn't mean much for Fantasy managers outside of the deepest of two-QB leagues who overinvest in Pickett and want a reliable backup option on the bench. For most of you, Trubisky, born in 1994, will be available on waivers if he gets the chance to play.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Largely ineffective in start

Trubisky completed 22 of 35 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Steelers' 21-18 loss to the Patriots on Thursday night. He also rushed eight times for 30 yards and another score and threw a two-point conversion pass. Making his first start of Kenny Pickett's (ankle) projected multi-game absence, Trubisky turned in a lackluster effort that featured plenty of inaccurate throws and saw him average only 5.4 yards per attempt. The veteran did serve as the Steelers' leading rusher -- albeit with a modest yardage total -- and connected with Diontae Johnson on a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. Trubisky added a one-yard scoring sneak early in the fourth quarter following a blocked punt that set the Steelers up in excellent field position, and he tacked on a sharp two-point conversion pass to Pat Freiermuth after that touchdown. However, Pittsburgh's next two drives ended in a punt and on downs, and Trubisky then padded his final numbers with 24- and 21-yard completions to Johnson and Allen Robinson, respectively, on the final two plays. With some additional time between Thursday's contest and a Week 15 Saturday afternoon road matchup against the Colts on Dec. 16, it remains to be seen if Trubisky is usurped by Mason Rudolph for a start if Pickett remains out, as is highly likely.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Week 14 Waiver Priority List

We don't know how long Kenny Pickett (ankle) will be out, but it could be for multiple weeks. As a result, Trubisky is worth adding in all Superflex and two-quarterback leagues for up to 5 percent of your FAB. Trubisky has tough matchups coming up against New England and then at Indianapolis, but if he remains the starter after that, then he faces Cincinnati in Week 16 and at Seattle in Week 17. He could be a useful option in deeper leagues in those games.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Likely to get at least one start

Trubisky completed 11 of 17 passes for 117 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 24-10 loss to Arizona. Trubisky entered the game just before halftime after Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury. He struggled to move the offense until the game was out of reach, as 65 of his yards came on the Steelers' final drive with the team down 21 points. Pickett is expected to miss time and will face a short turnaround before Thursday's matchup against the Patriots, meaning Trubisky is likely to get at least one start.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Efficient in victory

Trubisky completed seven of nine pass attempts for 54 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing once for 24 yards during Thursday's 24-0 preseason win over the Falcons. After a lackluster performance in the preseason opener, Trubisky has turned things around during the last two matchups, completing 17 of 22 pass attempts for 132 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions while rushing three times for 37 yards. Mason Rudolph wasn't nearly as effective during Thursday's preseason finale, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Trubisky open the regular season as the Steelers' No. 2 quarterback.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Leads road win

Trubisky completed 17 of 22 passes for 179 yards in Sunday's 24-16 win over the Panthers. He also rushed six times for nine yards and a touchdown. Trubisky led the Steelers to a road victory while getting the nod over Mason Rudolph to replace injured starter Kenny Pickett (concussion). Along with connecting with top wideout Diontae Johnson for a season-high 10 catches, Trubisky added a scoring rush with a quarterback sneak during the third quarter. Despite his serviceable performance Sunday, Trubisky would figure to return to the sideline should Pickett be cleared for Week 16's game versus the Raiders.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Confirmed as Week 15 starter

Trubisky will start Sunday's game against the Panthers. With Kenny Pickett (concussion) downgraded to out Saturday, Trubisky has been confirmed as Sunday's starter, which sets the stage for Mason Rudolph to serve as the team's No. 2 QB versus Carolina. In that context, Trubisky -- who started the Steelers' first four games of the season -- represents a Week 15 lineup option for those in QB-heavy leagues or who are otherwise scrambling for a short-term option at the position.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Expected to start Sunday

Trubisky is expected to start Sunday's game against the Panthers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. With Kenny Pickett listed as doubtful and still in the NFL's concussion protocol, Trubisky is expected to get the starting nod Sunday rather than Mason Rudolph, who he had been splitting practice reps with. Trubisky thus provides those scrambling for QB help in Week 15 with a lineup option, while Pickett will look to gain clearance to play in Week 16 against Las Vegas.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Option to start Sunday

Coach Mike Tomlin said Friday that he'll wait until Saturday to make a decision between Trubisky and Mason Rudolph to replace Kenny Pickett (doubtful - concussion) as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game at Carolina, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Trubisky subbed in for Pickett after the latter entered the concussion protocol last Sunday against the Ravens, completing 22 of 30 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in a 16-14 loss. While the performance was mistake-prone, Trubisky also posted 9.2 yards per attempt on the backs of three completions of 20-plus yards. Trubisky and Rudolph split first-team reps in practice all week, so Tomlin seemingly has all the info he needs to make a call between the two, but it won't be known until some point Saturday. Whoever gets the nod will be facing the Panthers' 15th-ranked pass defense (214.7 yards per game).

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Three picks in relief

Trubisky completed 22 of 30 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 16-14 loss to the Ravens. Trubisky entered the game in relief of Kenny Pickett (concussion) late in the first quarter. While he put up plenty of yardage, Trubisky doomed the Steelers to a loss with an ugly three-interception performance -- two of which occurred deep in Baltimore territory. While Trubisky won't be fantasy relevant in most traditional formats, he could provide a boost to Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth if Pickett is unable to return in time for a Week 15 matchup against the Panthers.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Limited production against Patriots

Trubisky completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing once for seven yards during Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Patriots. Trubisky was efficient during the preseason, but he hasn't had the same kind of success over the Steelers' first two games in the regular season. He's completed just 59.2 percent of his pass attempts and has been held under 200 yards in each of his first two games with Pittsburgh. Although the Steelers won their regular-season opener and were competitive against New England, they'll need more production from Trubisky if they hope to contend in the talented AFC North this season. The team will have a short week prior to Thursday's Week 3 matchup in Cleveland.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Rough debut with new team

Trubisky completed 21 of 38 pass attempts for 194 yards and one touchdown in an overtime win against Cincinnati on Sunday. No turnovers is a good thing, but Trubisky was unacceptably ineffective as a passer in this game, as he repeatedly missed opportunities and made inaccurate throws the few times he did recognize a passing opportunity. Though they pulled out a victory in Week 1 thanks largely to five turnovers by opposing quarterback Joe Burrow, the Steelers will need Trubisky to play better going forward if they hope to be competitive in 2022. They play at home against a reeling New England squad in Week 2.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: No decision on starting QB yet

Trubisky started Sunday's preseason finale against the Lions, but head coach Mike Tomlin told Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site that he has yet to make a decision on who will start at quarterback Week 1 at Cincinnati. Trubisky started the Steelers' final preseason game with the first unit, completing 15 of 19 pass attempts for 160 yards and a touchdown. The 28-year-old has put together a strong preseason, despite carrying a bust label from his time in Chicago. That said, rookie Kenny Pickett has been just as impressive, if not more given his lack of pro experience. While Trubisky's veteran status and strong results on the field this preseason would normally bode well for his chances to win this fierce quarterback competition, Tomlin's stance on not making a decision yet makes both signal-callers risky fantasy options for the time being.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Draws Sunday's start

Coach Mike Tomlin relayed that Trubisky will start Sunday's preseason finale against the Lions. Per Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site, Trubisky will be followed in the contest by Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. At this stage, the team has yet to declare a Week 1 starting QB, but Trubisky has been viewed as the favorite on that front. That said, Pickett -- the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft -- remains a threat to overtake his veteran counterpart at some point, and how the two fare in Sunday's action could well add some intrigue to the competition.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Confirms no announcement on starter

Trubisky confirmed Wednesday that there's been no official announcement of the Steelers' starting quarterback, Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Trubisky started the first two preseason games and reportedly has dominated reps with the first-team offense in practice, but it's possible he's facing a late challenge from Kenny Pickett, who has completed 19 of 22 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns in exhibitions. Pickett even got some work with the first-string offense after Trubisky was pulled from the second preseason game, throwing for 63 yards and a touchdown in the final minute of the first half. Trubisky also has good numbers this preseason -- 9-of-15 passing for 123 yards and a touchdown -- and remains the favorite to start Week 1, but Pickett's excellent preseason increases the veteran's risk of losing the starting job if he struggles in-season. Trubisky said he expects to start Pittsburgh's final preseason game Sunday against the Lions, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

  • Steelers' Mitch Trubisky: Pulling ahead in QB competition

Trubisky is trending toward winning the Steelers' starting quarterback job, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Trubisky has had his fair share of struggles early in camp, but he's still spent most of his time with the first-team offense ahead of Pittsburgh's first preseason game Saturday against the Seahawks. While Mason Rudolph has performed better than expected and Kenny Pickett is showing improvement as camp progresses, Rapoport reports that Trubisky will "almost certainly" start under center for the Steelers' regular-season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 11. The team's quarterback competition remains open, and it's certainly possible that Pickett sees some looks at some point after Pittsburgh selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but Trubisky seems to be gaining the trust of the coaching staff with just over a month left before the start of the regular season.

  • Steelers' Mitchell Trubisky: Joining Steelers

Trubisky has agreed to a two-year deal with the Steelers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft (by the Bears) served as Josh Allen's backup with the Bills last season. With the Steelers, however, Trubisky now is slated to have a chance to step back into a starting role, taking over for Pittsburgh's long-time franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger, who retired after the 2021 season. Also in the team's signal-caller mix are Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.

  • Bills' Mitchell Trubisky: Target of Giants

The Giants are expected to seriously pursue Trubisky when free agency begins March 16, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. If he were to land in New York, Trubisky would reunite with first-year head coach Brian Daboll and first-year general manager Joe Schoen, both of whom were members of the Buffalo organization along with the quarterback in 2021. Linking up with the Giants would leave Trubisky in line to compete with incumbent Daniel Jones for the starting job, leaving it up to the team's new brain trust to decide which former top-10 draft pick is the best option heading into the regular season. Despite the Giants' apparent interest in him, Trubisky could be more motivated to head to a team that could present him with a clearer path to a starting job. Based on the current composition of their respective quarterback rooms, the Saints, Steelers and Seahawks all stand out as teams that could view Trubisky as a clear upgrade over their existing options at the position.

  • Bills' Mitchell Trubisky: Could return if market is cold

Bills general manager Brandon Beane said the team would like to re-sign Trubisky if the quarterback doesn't get the contract he's hoping for elsewhere, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. After signing with the Bills for 2021 and serving as Josh Allen's backup, Trubisky will try to find a chance to compete for a starting job. He's thus unlikely to re-sign with the Bills before the start of free agency, but he might consider returning as a backup if he doesn't find a favorable opportunity elsewhere. Trubisky attempted only eight passes in 2021 with Allen enjoying a healthy, productive season.

  • Bills' Mitchell Trubisky: Ready for potential start

Trubisky will handle a larger share of reps in practice this week in case teammate Josh Allen -- who suffered a foot injury in Sunday's overtime loss to the Buccaneers and was limited at Wednesday's practice -- can't play this week, Dante Lasting of the Bills' official site reports. Given his track record of playing through injuries coupled with the fact the Bills are barely hanging onto a playoff spot, Allen will likely suit up this weekend, but if sits out, his understudy could be a sneaky play in Week 15 against a struggling Panthers squad. Trubisky has looked good during his limited preseason and practice work ever since joining the Bills, and while not nearly as accomplished as Allen, he has a decent arm and scrambling ability that should work well in Buffalo's up-tempo offense.

  • Bills' Mitchell Trubisky: Makes return from COVID-19 list

The Bills activated Trubisky (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday. Sidelined for the Bills' past two games after testing positive for the virus Nov. 6, Trubisky looks poised to turn in a full week of practice and reclaim backup duties behind starting signal-caller Josh Allen in Sunday's game against the Colts. Davis Webb served as Allen's understudy in the Bills' 45-17 win over the Jets in Week 10 and took a couple of kneel downs at the end of the blowout victory.
