  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Heads to SD in Soto deal

The Yankees traded Vasquez, Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito and Kyle Higashioka to San Diego on Wednesday in exchange for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Vasquez appeared in 11 games and made five starts for the Yankees in 2023, registering a 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 37.2 innings. His numbers were worse in Triple-A (4.59 ERA, 1.47 WHIP in 80.1 IP), but the Padres' depleted rotation presents an opportunity for Vasquez to be a part of San Diego's Opening Day roster.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. Vasquez will end up as the Yankees' roster casualty as Frankie Montas (shoulder) returns from the 60-day injured list. Despite a lackluster season in Triple-A with a 4.59 ERA, the 24-year-old righty was solid out of the bullpen for the Yankees, posting a 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 37.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Works in long relief

Vasquez struck out two and was charged with two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. Vasquez entered the rotation Sept. 12 to make a 3.2-inning start in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Boston, but he's made his subsequent two appearances out of the bullpen. The Yankees appear to have settled on Luke Weaver as their No. 5 starter over Vasquez and Jhony Brito, both of whom will likely continue to work in relief for the final week of the season.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Solid in no-decision

Vasquez did not factor into the decision in a Yankees win during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. The 24-year-old blanked Boston for three innings before fading in the fourth, exiting after 60 pitches (40 strikes). Vasquez was working in a tandem with Jhony Brito, who wound up getting the win, and the two rookie right-handers combined for what was effectively a quality start -- two earned runs over six innings between them. The duo's effectiveness could encourage the Yankees to keep them together in a rotation slot, though neither one might be available when New York next needs a starter Saturday in Pittsburgh. Vasquez has a 2.67 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB through his first 30.1 big-league innings.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Picks up win in bulk relief

Vasquez (2-1) registered the win against the Marlins on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out two. Ian Hamilton opened for the Yankees and had a spotless first inning before faltering in the second. The team then turned to Vasquez, who permitted a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning and a leadoff homer to Josh Bell in the sixth. Vasquez has managed a 1.89 ERA through his first 19 major-league innings, although that's come with a 12:8 K:BB. He figures to receive additional chances with Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out and Luis Severino struggling.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Recalled from Triple-A

The Yankees recalled Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. The 24-year-old right-hander is lined up to work in bulk relief behind opener Ian Hamilton on Friday at Miami. Vasquez should wind up operating as more of a traditional starter down the stretch after the Yankees had to place Nestor Cortes (shoulder) back on the injured list.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Expected to start Friday

The Yankees are expected to recall Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Friday in Miami, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. The team hasn't announced anything yet, but it has an opening in the rotation Friday and Vasquez is on turn. Vasquez holds a 1.17 ERA in three starts with the Yanks this season, although that's come with a 10:7 K:BB over 15.1 innings. If the 24-year-old pitches well Friday, he would seem to have a good shot to remain in the rotation at the expense of the struggling Luis Severino.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Starting Wednesday

Vasquez will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start for the Yankees on Wednesday against the Orioles, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Vasquez has pitched well in two outings for the Bronx Bombers this season, holding a 1.74 ERA and 9:4 K:BB over 10.1 innings. The right-hander has a less impressive 5.11 ERA in 13 starts with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, though he's struck out well over a batter per frame in the minors.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Back to minors

Vasquez was returned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox. Vasquez earned the win after holding the White Sox to only two hits and a walk across 5.2 shutout innings in the second game of the twin bill. It was his second career start in the majors, and he's held his own by maintaining a 9:4 K:BB across 10.1 innings while surrendering only two earned runs. Vasquez will be stuck in the minors for the time being, but he's a candidate to enter the Yankees' rotation should there be any injuries.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Likely to start Wednesday

The Yankees are expected to call up Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Wednesday's game versus the White Sox, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. New York still isn't listing an official replacement in the rotation for the injured Nestor Cortes (shoulder) for Wednesday's contest, but Vasquez was spotted in the clubhouse Tuesday. He can't be promoted yet unless it's to replace an injured player, so the Yankees will likely officially place Cortes on the injured list prior to Wednesday's contest to facilitate Vasquez's call-up. Vasquez allowed two runs over 4.2 innings in his major-league debut against the Padres on May 26.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Handed loss in debut

Vasquez (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings Friday. He struck out six and took a loss against the Padres. The 24-year-old worked through four shutout frames before coughing up a two-run homer to Juan Soto in the fifth. Vasquez primarily relied on a cutter/sinker combination while touching 96 mph on his fastball. He'll likely head back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after this spot start, where he's registered a 4.85 ERA across 42.2 frames.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: In line for debut Friday

Vasquez will make his major-league debut for the Yankees on Friday versus the Padres, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. The Yankees don't have a starter listed for Friday, but Vasquez was spotted in the clubhouse and confirmed reports that he'd be starting. Vasquez has posted a 4.85 ERA and 50:23 K:BB over 42.2 innings covering nine starts this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He's a solid pitching prospect but wouldn't be an advisable streamer versus San Diego.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Reassigned to minor-league camp

The Yankees optioned Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and reassigned him to minor-league camp. Vasquez was added to the 40-man roster in November and is one of the organization's top pitching prospects, but he never had a chance of breaking camp with the big club given that he's yet to pitch beyond the Double-A level. The right-hander will open the season in the minors and will look to build upon a solid campaign at Double-A last year that included a 3.90 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 120:41 K:BB over 115.1 innings.
