Leonardo DiCaprio Describes Results of Charitable Work

Blood Diamond star Leonardo DiCaprio appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Nov 14, the same day he received two Golden Globe nominations; for Blood Diamond and The Departed.

DiCaprio described the charitable work occurring and emphasized the importance of relief efforts.

“We got to go to the orphanages for the SOS (SOS Africa) out there and see children that were having new opportunities in life, and it’s a great thing to see the money that we actually give in these richer countries going into something tangible like that. You know, seeing these orphans be able to have a new opportunity in life. It’s hard to make that connection when you donate from far away, but it does make a huge, huge difference when you see it.”

DiCaprio commented on the natural beauty of the country, adventures on safari and while scuba diving and getting to know the culture and the people while developing his Danny Archer character. “They have such amazing attitudes.” DiCaprio said even extreme poverty and high aids rates fail to diminish their lust for life. He said that his group would drive around and people would be literally dancing in the streets each day simply out of joy for life. “When you come back home it gives you a completely different attitude about where you’re from.”
