Top Saints News

  • Saints' Cameron Jordan: Back at practice

Jordan (ankle) was a limited participant at the Saints' practice Thursday, Brooke Kirchhofer of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Jordan was unable to participate at Wednesday's first practice session of the week, but he was able to be back out on the field Thursday. The defensive end has been able to play through the ankle issue each of the last two weeks and he appears likely to go Sunday versus the Panthers.

  • Saints' Kendre Miller: Logs another DNP

Miller (ankle) did not participate in Thursday's practice.

The rookie running back out of TCU has been held out since Week 10, and it still seems as if he's continuing to recover from his ankle issue. Miller has appeared in seven games for the Saints thus far, recording 83 rushing yards on 28 attempts. He'll almost certainly carry an injury designation into the weekend unless he's able to record a full practice session Friday.

  • Saints' Juwan Johnson: Stays limited in practice

Johnson (quadricep) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.

Johnson matched his level of practice participation from Wednesday, so he may need to upgrade to full activity Friday to avoid carrying an injury designation into Sunday's game versus the Panthers. If Johnson isn't able to play through the injury this weekend, the Saints would likely turn to a committee of Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham to fill snaps at tight end.

  • Saints' Derek Carr: Maintains limited practice activity

Carr (concussion/rib/right shoulder) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.

Carr has opened Week 14 prep with a pair of limited practices, after the trio of injuries knocked him out early in this past Sunday's loss to the Lions. The concussion appears to be the chief concern for Carr at this juncture, considering that he was previously following the five-step protocol after exiting the Saints' Week 10 loss to Minnesota with a brain injury. He wasn't forced to miss any game action thanks to a well-timed Week 11 bye, but Carr could have a tougher time passing through the protocol ahead of this Sunday's contest against the Panthers. In order to play this weekend, Carr may need to practice fully Friday in addition to getting clearance from an independent neurologist. If Carr isn't available Sunday, Jameis Winston would likely step in as the Saints' starting quarterback.

  • Saints' Taysom Hill: Idle for another practice

Hill (foot/hand) wasn't on the field for Thursday's practice, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Now that he's missed the Saints' first two Week 14 practices, Hill will likely need to get back on the field Friday in some capacity to put himself in a position to be available Sunday against the Panthers. Hill is coming off a busy Week 13 loss to the Lions in which he played 28 snaps and took a season-high 13 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown while throwing two incompletions and reeling in his two targets for 15 receiving yards. With the status of Derek Carr (concussion/rib/shoulder) uncertain for Sunday, Hill could end up taking more reps under center than usual if he's able to overcome his own pair of injuries, though Jameis Winston would likely serve as the Saints' primary quarterback if Carr can't play.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Spectator for Thursday's practice

Shaheed (thigh) wasn't on the field for Thursday's practice, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Shaheed hasn't practiced in any fashion since exiting the Saints' Week 12 loss to the Falcons with a thigh injury, putting him at risk of missing a second straight game Sunday against the Panthers if he's unable to get back on the field in some capacity Friday during the team's final Week 14 session. Elsewhere in the Saints' receiver room, top option Chris Olave was missing from practice Thursday, though his absence was due to an illness rather than an injury. Olave thus appears likely to be ready to play Sunday, while A.T. Perry and Lynn Bowden would presumably join him as regulars in three-wide sets if Shaheed isn't able to go against Carolina.

  • Saints' Chris Olave: Misses practice with illness

Olave was sidelined for practice Thursday due to an illness, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

After sustaining a concussion in the Saints' Week 12 loss to the Falcons, Olave was able to quickly clear the five-step protocol and suited up in this past Sunday's loss to the Lions, logging a 61 percent snap share while finishing with five catches for 119 yards on eight targets. Olave wasn't included on the Saints' initial Week 14 injury report, and while he seems to have avoided any setbacks in his recovery from the concussion following his return to action this past weekend, he's now apparently under the weather. Assuming Olave is able to get back on the practice field Friday, he should be cleared to play Sunday against the Panthers while serving as the No. 1 option in the passing game for either Derek Carr (concussion/rib/shoulder) or Jameis Winston.
